On Wednesday, supporters and opponents of LB626 - the 'heartbeat' bill, which would ban abortions once cardiac activity is detected in the womb - gathered at the Capitol for a debate on the bill's merits. Proponents and detractors testified to the Health and Human Services Committee for about eight hours.

State Sen. Murman proposed a bill which would prohibit Nebraskans under 19 to attend drag shows, which drew criticism by UNL community members. Law professors pointed out unconstitutional aspects of the bill, while members of Spectrum UNL protested it’s potential impacts on trans Nebraskans.

“It is almost always unconstitutional for the government to use criminal law to ‘protect the children’ from ideas the state considers dangerous,” UNL assistant professor of law Kyle Langvardt, whose expertise is constitutional law, said.
