Columnist Alexis Goeman grew up visiting zoos. She always enjoyed them as a child, but now that she has gotten older she’s realized that the practices of some zoos deserve closer criticism.

Goopy, Slimy, Fuzzy, Lumpy, Dopey and Crusty. Your new favorite baby names? Maybe not. But for post-doctoral fellow Dr. Erin Carr, those six names keep track of six previously undiscovered fungi her team is researching.

Now, her research - in which she developed possibly the second ever protocol for melanin extraction - is in review at G3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics, and her team is working to announce her new fungi species and genus to the scientific community.
